The Queen of Sheeeba [userpic]
Just finished a very positive (and short) Julia Child biography.

She called homosexual men pedos and fags, yet one of her best friends was James Beard. She publicly said that she didn't like the "fagification" of the restaurant industry. This book contends that, in the 1980s she changed her views on gay marriage. It seems that, even though she disdained fey homosexual men (she had less of a problem not-so-fey gays and lesbians (she once said about lesbians, "that can't be much fun"), she had many, many gay friends. Once they started dying in the '80s, she changed her views on gay marriage. She was in her 70s at the time.

A little disappointing from the woman who sent this Christmas card out:

title or description

I know it says Valentine's Day but they used it as their Christmas card.

I agree. It's just the way things were at that time, and the people reflected it. Not that it mitigates the wrong-headed attitude, but it helps explain it and helps us understand an odious trait in an otherwise sterling personality.

One wonders what people a few generations hence will say about us when they read the memoirs and biographies of our contemporaries.
