The Queen of Sheeeba [userpic]
Good Lord, I hate this body I'm in. Oh and a warning-- this is disgusting.

I've got an ingrown toenail. If I were to kick you in the eye with the foot it's on, the last thing you'll see is that my big toe nail is shaped like a 'j'. That little fucking hook likes to grow into my meat.

Once it gets long enough, it'll stop digging and my toe will stop hurting. Usually. Not today. Today my toe is doing something new. It's turning red and weeping. What the fucking fuck, you stupid body? I'm gonna have to go see my doctor about this, aren't I?

Soak in warm water with epsom salts and it will help. But yes, go see the doctor and they will remove either the whole nail or part. If this happens a lot, you need to change shoes or have the doc remove the whole nail and let it grow back.

I have had MANY ingrown nails and have had partial and full removals.

It happens when I cut the hook of the 'j' too short. It always hurts like the devil until it grows out but this is the first time it's grown red and weepy. Stupid toe.

If you can stand it, tear off the tip of a Q-tip and try to wedge the cotton under the side of the J--it will hopefully lift the hook up high enough to grow out. Otherwise, I'd say the doctor for at least antibiotics. According to my physician, who may or may not be a complete quack, Neosporin is not effective below the knees. I don't know why but it's what he swears.

Huh. It's always worked for me. (Not that I've had to use it on toes that much.)

In the meantime, treat it with Neosporin or similar antibiotic ointment.

Tuck a wee piece of cotton between the hard sharp edge and your toe. You may need a toothpick to jam it down in there. Dig it out and change it every so often--more often if you have a current inflammation. It helps prevent problems, IME.
